Moving day can be hectic. But it doesn't have to be and you can help ensure that everything goes smoothly.
With a little planning, you can keep your volunteers or professional movers safe and comfortable and
everything will run smoothly on moving day.
Be there on moving day. Don't leave before your helpers do.
If you must leave, be sure to let them know who can answer their questions in your absence. |
Have plenty of packing supplies. Be sure you've got the necessary
packing supplies (boxes, tape, bubble wrap, and so on) to let the packers get the job done. Tip: moving companies
will often let you return unused materials.
Don't overfill boxes. Keep the weight of each box manageable
enough for one person to carry it easily.
Mark boxes clearly. Mark boxes "HEAVY: BOOKS"
to warn the person carrying them. Write "FRAGILE" and "THIS END UP" on the boxes to avoid spills and breaks.
Write the destination room and contents to make unpacking easier. Put your name and destination address on
each packing label to be sure the moving company doesn't confuse your boxes with someone else's.
Pad items well. Be sure that sharp edges are covered to avoid injury.
Check the lighting, temperature, and telephone. Turn on lights and heat or air conditioning to
keep your movers comfortable. Arrange with the telephone company to have the phone service available in both
your current and destination homes on moving day. Be sure that the lights and heat are working in your new
home before you move.
Put down extra rugs. On rainy or snowy days, beware of wet
and muddy surfaces. Put down rugs to help protect the floors from dirt and the movers from slipping.
Clear paths in the house and yard. The movers should be able
to manoeuvre easily. If necessary, take down stairwell handrails, clip bushes and trees, and keep gates
open to facilitate access. Remember to tie up the dog, and keep the kids and toys away from the movers' path.
Vacuum furniture before moving day. It's more pleasant to move
an armchair or couch that isn't too dusty or covered with animal hair. Remember to vacuum under the cushions too!
Keep snacks and beverages ready for break time. Depending on how long your friends and family
stay to help, plan for one or more snacks or meals. Keep it simple. You can even call for takeout or pick up
ready made food at a local grocery, deli, or restaurant. Be sure to have plenty of beverages, especially in
warm weather, to keep everyone hydrated. You certainly value your possessions, so give the helpers non-alcoholic
beverages while they’re working. The beer can come later to toast a successful move.
Check nooks and crannies.
Take one last look through the drawers and cabinets. Wipe all surfaces and clean out crumbs as a courtesy
to the incoming residents. Be sure you haven't left valuable items behind.
Sweep up once the house is empty.
The house might not look very clean when everything is finally moved out. As a courtesy to the next residents,
give the floors a once-over with a broom, vacuum, or wet mop.
